How simple is this melody? Would it surprise you if it only consisted of notes from the pentatonic scale? It shouldn’t! Despite putting the listener through this roller coaster of tension and release, The Weeknd and Daft Punk reward the listener during the chorus with a simple and catchy melody. Can you imagine how terrible that would be if we never got to that tonic? It would be like a major television show leaving so many questions unanswered. It’s not until the end of the first line of lyrics that that tension is finally resolved when the leading tone, D, steps up to the tonic, Eb. You’ll see that The Weeknd leaves us hanging on the leading tone quite a bit during the verse. So above, I’ve circled where the leading tones are in the melody. Essentially, this song makes a lot out of a little and this has always been one of the fascinating aspects of pop music to me. The use of chords is pretty clever as well, with the verse and chorus consisting of iii-vi-IV-I and the pre-chorus flipping those chords around a little bit. This functions beautifully because the song begins with simple downbeats and then we’re treated with a catchy bassline that doesn’t get stale. “I Feel It Coming” has a simple, rhythmic bassline that comes in at the first chorus and remains throughout the song. Other than sounding like Michael, this song has a lot of other cool stuff going on. Yep, that’s because the melody is so staccato. If you’ve been listening to the Weeknd for a little bit you’ll probably notice that the verse in “ Can’t Feel My Face” was also very Jackson-like. His vibrato throughout “I Feel It Coming” sounds an awful lot like MJ in “Human Nature.” Also, the “I” in every chorus is very short and STACCATO. Well, The Weeknd started singing like this too. “Bleh, what does this have to do with the Weeknd?” you shriek. I cannot think of any other vocal performance, sung OR rapped, that is as staccato as this. You’re probably already hearing a song in your head but check out “ Smooth Criminal” again. While other singers sing legato, MJ sings staccato. The word is used to describe this type of performance is legato. When we think of a traditionally “good” melody we think of it from a standpoint of the notes flowing smoothly from one to another. Yeah, that doesn’t make sense, but hear me out. Michael also tends to not sing like a singer. A perfect example of this (and one of my favorite songs of his) occurs throughout “ Man In The Mirror.” Check out the verses and listen to how different MJ’s style is to Xtina’s. MJ takes a different approach in that his vibrato is usually pretty rapid. In that example I just linked to, you can hear Christina display great control with her vibrato by slowing down and then speeding up the variations in pitch towards the end of a phrase. I promise you that you’ve heard the technique a million times before.

Aside from these, Michael had a signature vibrato.įor those of you that don’t know, vibrato is a slight variation in pitch that produces a stronger or richer tone than a typical straight tone. MJ sang in a unique way with plenty of idiosyncrasies that every bad impersonator has ever tried. Why? I had briefly mentioned in a prior week that we tend to not focus so much on the notes of a melody but notice how those notes are sung.

For now, The Weeknd will be performing at the AMAs going down this Sunday.Okay so yes, The Weeknd’s voice sounds pretty similar to Michael Jackson’s. Starboy: Legend of the Fall 2017 World Tour also kicks off in Sweden February 2017. The album boasts a whopping 18 tracks and includes contributions from Kendrick Lamar, Daft Punk, Future and Del Ray. The Weeknd’s Starboy lands everywhere November 25th. The single also features Beauty Behind The Madness‘ collaborator Lana Del Rey. The second song, “Party Monster,” is exactly what the title implies - Abel waxing beautifully about drinking, coke-sniffing and waking up next to nameless girls with all of it wrapped together by a thumping club beat. Nevertheless, like “ I Can’t Feel My Face,” “Coming” is a straight up dance jam perfect for your weak attempts at recreating MJ’s footwork in the comfort of your bathroom. The Starboy’s vocals on the Daft Punk-produced track are so similar to Jackson’s that it’s almost frustrating to think of what could’ve been if Jackson hadn’t passed away in 2009. The Weeknd unleashed not one, but two brand new singles while you were blissfully sleeping Thursday night and one of them may as well have said “featuring Michael Jackson.” I am of the opinion that there was no way the King of Pop’s ghost wasn’t in the studio when Abel got in the booth and recorded “I Feel It Coming.”
